strategies to increase production
One of the periods of most rapid development of agricultural methods and of technology linked to farming came during the so-called agricultural revolution in England during the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period, farming moved away from the old three-field system and its land enclosures. Individual management of farms became more important than the village-based sharing that preceded it.
Once farmers owned their own patches of land, they became keen to improve it and improve yields and profits. Mechanisation, improved plant and animal breeding, improved rotation systems and more efficient marketing all followed. These changes took place alongside the industrial revolution that was helping the country move from small-scale craft manufacturing to large-scale factory manufacturing in cities. It was these urban populations that needed the increased agricultural surplus.
Much of the increase in agricultural production since the 1950s was the result of the intensification of farming through the use of fertilisers to produce increased yields and healthier crops. Pesticides and herbicides were also applied to control pests, diseases and weeds. More recently a number of strategies have been used in both developed and developing countries to increase agricultural output...
