growth hormones
Although this is banned in the EU, steroid hormones can be implanted in beef cattle to improve weight gain, feed conversion efficiency and carcass quality. Hormones can also be used to increase milk yields in dairy cattle by as much as 10%. This technology is used widely in the USA, but many countries have not approved the use of growth hormones, citing worries over public health and animal welfare. The ban in the EU is the subject of a long-standing dispute with the USA, which currently has retaliatory sanctions on some imports from Europe.
