irrigation
Irrigation has been used since agriculture began but many traditional systems are regarded as inefficient and not always beneficial to the environment. Flooding and furrow irrigation are not efficient in water conservation and can be responsible for soil erosion, while sprinklers may waste water.
Research has developed new methods, particularly drip irrigation, which address these problems. Drips deliver water at or near the root zone and are water efficient as evaporation and runoff are minimised.
